SAS in Libya ready to help stranded Britons

SAS in Libya ready to help stranded Britons "THE SAS has flown a snatch squad into Libya as fears grew for the safety of hundreds of stranded British citizens.

A source said: “We can no longer rest on our laurels. Everything is now being done to get our people home safely so the SAS has been sent in to extract anyone in difficulty.”

It is understood that the elite unit flew into Tripoli on an RAF Hercules troop carrier plane yesterday and more are on standby. The small detachment is also there to protect the C-130 aircraft as it lifts UK citizens and embassy staff out of Tripoli.

The crisis has also exposed the Hereford-based SAS as dangerously undermanned and under-resourced due to the Coalition’s defence cuts.

A senior military source said: “Special forces from the West are in Libya, all rescuing their citizens, many trained by us. It’s ironic in some cases they are the least resourced.”"
